Rotating Wallpaper
Changing the wallpaper in Windows is nice. But
if you want a different one each time you start Windows, you won't
probably want to change it manually each time.
There is, however, an easy way to change the wallpaper
at each time you start.
Note : The example
pictures shown in this page have
been made with the French version of
Windows 98.
Don't rely exactly on the display shown here.
Step #1 : Prepare a folder where to put wallpapers
First of all, you need to put all the wallpapers
you will want to display in the same folder. The best to do is to
create a short-name folder under C:\WINDOWS. In this example,
the name is BGR for Backgrounds.
So, the directory C:\WINDOWS\BGR now exists
on your computer.
Step #2 : Create wallpapers and put them in the folder
The best to do is to create wallpapers which fit
exactly in your desktop size. If you setup the display to 800x600
pixels, then you may create several 800 x 600 sized wallpapers.
On my computers at home and at work, I've put several
gradients wallpapers. They are quite easy to make with tools like
Paint
Shop Pro, and they are pretty cool !
To optimize the loading and the display of your
wallpapers, try to reduce the color depth to 16 colors (4-bit color
depth) or 256 colors (8-bit color depth).
Save your wallpapers in .BMP format in the
folder you have made, and give them numbers.
Example : BGR01.BMP , BGR02.BMP, BGR03.BMP, etc...

Step #3 : Make your wallpapers rotate at startup
With Notepad or DOS editor, edit the C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT
file (this file is located at the root of your hard disk C:\ )
and add the following lines :
REN C:\WINDOWS\BGR\BGR01.BMP BGRXX.BMP
REN C:\WINDOWS\BGR\BGR02.BMP BGR01.BMP
REN C:\WINDOWS\BGR\BGR03.BMP BGR02.BMP
.
. etc
.
REN C:\WINDOWS\BGR\BGR10.BMP BGR09.BMP
REN C:\WINDOWS\BGR\BGRXX.BMP BGR10.BMP
By renaming the file names, you can rotate them.
Easy, isn't it ? Your AUTOEXEC.BAT file should then contain
the following lines, if you typed everything correctly.
Step #4 : Setup the wallpaper in the Windows Display Properties
Go in the Control Panel, Display Properties,
Wallpaper, and select the first file in the correct folder.
Specify you want to display it centered.

Your job is done ! Each time you boot,
the computer will swap all the wallpaper file names, making
them rotate on a cyclic basis. Since Windows keeps track of
the filename and not really the file itself, it will display
a different wallpaper each time you boot ! It's quite nice,
isn't it ? :-)))
Note : Instead of 16-color or 256-color
BMP files, you may also use true-color JPG files. However, this
requires Windows 98 "Active Desktop" capability, and it
may slow down your computer. The most optimized way to rotate wallpapers
is described above, but feel free to use .JPG files instead if your
computer is fast enough to handle this without problem.
Download some wallpapers !
The following zip file contains eight wide
true-color wallpapers made by me. Feel free to download it and install
the wallpapers ! JPG 1024x768 format.
