Defragment your hard disk
When you use your computer, Windows continually stores
information in temporary files for faster access to data. But after
a long time, all this information is splitted in several places
of your hard disk and the disk head needs to run from a side to
the other one to collect all the needed information, and it lowers
your computer's performance.
To repair this, you should defragment your hard disk
every week, and every time you install/uninstall a big software
(more than 20 Mb).
Note : The example
pictures shown in this page have
been made with the French version of
Windows 98,
and the clues given are translated from French.
Don't rely exactly on the display shown here.
Step #1 : Run the defragment utility
Click on Start, Run, and type defrag
This should launch the defragmentation utility.
If it doesn't start, find Defrag with Start -
Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Defrag.
If it is not installed, add it with Start - Parameters
- Configuration Panel - Add/Remove Software - Windows Installation
and add it in the system tools folder.
Step #2 : Configure defrag
Depending on your version, choose to defrag all
local hard disks, to verify the drive, and to reorganize
files so that programs can run more quickly.
Step #3 : Let defrag do the job
When you properly configured defrag, click Ok
and see...
To work properly, defrag needs you not to use your
computer during defragmentation, and it would be better to disable
the screensaver.
Defrag will start over from the beginning if a
file is accessed on the drive defrag is currently working.
Step #4 : Defrag has done the job !
When it has completed its tasks, defrag will ask
you if you want to exit, answer Yes. Your computer should
now open files and start programs more quickly.
